Protective Plates and Retainers
Dental retainers are devices used after orthodontics to help maintain the new position of the teeth. After orthodontic appliances (such as brackets and aligners) are removed, teeth tend to return to their original position due to the elasticity of the surrounding tissues. Retainers prevent or minimize this relapse by ensuring that teeth remain in their new alignment.
Types of Retainers:
Fixed Retainers: Also known as permanent or fixed retainers, these are thin, discreet wires that attach to the back of the teeth. They are permanent and cannot be removed by the patient.
Removable Retainers: These are appliances that can be removed and replaced by the patient. They can be clear plates or devices with wires and hooks that fit over the teeth.
