Dental radiography and dental tomography
Dental radiography is an important tool in dentistry that provides detailed images of the teeth, gums and other oral structures. These images are useful in diagnosing and treating various dental conditions by allowing dental health professionals to see areas that are not visible during a regular dental exam. Here is some key information about dental X-rays:
- Intraoral X-rays: These X-rays are taken with the film or sensor placed inside the mouth. Common types include periapical x-rays (showing the root and crown of a specific tooth) and interproximal or bite-wing x-rays (showing the crowns of the upper and lower teeth in a specific section of the mouth).
- Extraoral radiographs: These are taken with the image receptor outside the mouth. Panoramic radiographs provide an overview of all oral structures, while dental computed tomography (CT) scans provide detailed three-dimensional images.
