Restauración dental

Dental Restoration

Dental restorations, also known as shims, are common procedures in dentistry that are used to repair teeth that have been affected by decay or other injuries. The main goal of a shim is to restore the form, function and esthetics of the affected tooth. Resin or Composite: Composed of synthetic resins and ceramic or glass particles. It is tooth-colored, which makes it aesthetically pleasing. Resin shims adhere to the tooth and are a popular choice in cosmetic dentistry.

Porcelain: Used primarily for more extensive restorations, such as inlays or veneers. Porcelain is highly esthetic and strong, but its fabrication process is usually more time-consuming and can be more expensive.

Crowns and dentures

Crowns

Dental crowns are dental restorations that cover and protect a damaged, weakened or unusually shaped tooth.

  • Purposes of dental crowns:
  • Restoration of damaged teeth: Crowns are used to cover and protect teeth that have suffered significant damage due to decay, fractures, excessive wear or other conditions.
  • Strengthening weakened teeth: When a tooth has been weakened by root canal treatment (endodontics), a crown can provide additional strength and protection.
  • Improving dental esthetics: Crowns are also used for esthetic purposes to improve the appearance of discolored, misshaped or otherwise imperfect teeth.
  • Materials used: Porcelain: Porcelain crowns are aesthetically pleasing and can be customized to match the color and texture of natural teeth.
  • Metal-porcelain: These crowns have an internal metal framework covered with porcelain. They provide additional strength due to the metal and aesthetics of porcelain.
  • Zirconia: An advanced ceramic material that combines durability with esthetics. It is commonly used in posterior crowns.
  • Care and maintenance: Dental crowns require care similar to that of natural teeth, including regular brushing, flossing and regular dental visits. Although crowns are durable, it is important to avoid habits such as biting on hard objects or chewing ice, which can damage the crown.

Dentures:

Dentures are devices designed to replace missing teeth and restore function and aesthetics to the mouth. There are several types of dentures, each with its own characteristics and purpose.

  • Partial Dentures: Removable partial dentures: Also known as “partial plates” or “partials,” these dentures are used when there are still some natural teeth remaining in the mouth. They are attached to adjacent natural teeth by clasps or other attachment methods.
  • Fixed Prosthesis: used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is anchored to natural teeth or adjacent dental implants, providing an esthetic and functional solution.
  • Complete Dentures: Removable complete dentures: these prostheses are used when all the teeth in a dental arch (upper or lower) have been lost. Complete dentures are held in place by suction, gravity and oral musculature.
